Halloween Mood Lighting

Halloween Mood Lighting

I wanted to elevate my Halloween decor this year, but didn’t want to spend a fortune. One way to give the outside of your house a spooky vibe is to add Halloween mood lighting. After some experimentation I have found that mixing these 5 types of lighting gives me the full effect I want.
I. Mood Lighting
Mood lighting is the type of lighting that just gives a soft glow, spotlights some of your decor, or adds color to a  blank wall. Adding this color gives you a spooky vibe. Good Halloween mood colors are blue, a soft purple or red, depending on your decor theme. I used a blue for my graveyard area and a reddish purple for my pirate shipwreck area.  I found these amazing waterproof flood lights that you can pick your color and even if you want to do color changing effects.  I got these because I can also use them for any other holiday.

2. Accent Lighting
After you have the  mood light in place, you need to add some accents or pops of color. Orange or green are great for this, but remember you want to choose a color on the opposite spectrum of your mood lighting so that it pops! I chose an orange bush net light to compliment the blue graveyard. It just screams YES IT’S HALLOWEEN! You can also get led strands or string lights if you have trees or other areas around your house you want to make pop.

3. Path Lights
The whole reason for doing this Halloween lighting is to welcome Trick or Treaters at night and give them that spooky experience, so I wanted to make sure the walk up to the door was fun.  I have seen some other DIYers do solar lights inside pumpkins, but I wanted to go with my graveyard theme here. So, I ran down to the Dollar Tree and got 4 plastic skulls. They were the perfect size and thickness of plastic.  I ordered some small bright path lights on Amazon that had a clear top instead of a big black top.  I then cut a circle for the solar part at the top of the skull and cut an X on the bottom to feed the light through.  I then put a little tack of glue gun to the top to keep it in place.  I didn’t go overboard with the glue though because I could potentially use these for other Holidays! I love how these turned out next to the eerie blue graveyard.

4. Fun Lights

On top of all the spooky stuff, I also wanted to add a little fun lighting. One way I did this was with a light that moves and swirls with patterns along with fun holiday holographs to project onto my garage. I felt this dead space could use some movement and color. My 3 year old loves standing in front of it trying to catch the objects.

5. Porch Light Color Bulbs

Lastly, if you have a porch light, change out the bulb to a color bulb like red, orange or blue.  This still gives enough light for your trick or treaters, but doesn’t blare that white light.  You can find lots of inexpensive options and sometimes even find them at the dollar store, but I opted to get an LED smart bulb with color options so I can use it for different holidays.

The cool part of the lighting elements above is that you can use all of these for other Holidays as they change colors and projections. Hope you enjoyed reading about my Halloween mood lighting and it gives you some fun ideas on how to elevate your Halloween vibes this year!
